Evaluation Question Three

Further research came from the use of Survey Monkey:

We used Survey Monkey in order to get a better idea of what we would utilise within our music video and further our understanding of the indie genre. It was posted on Facebook so therefore we would receive feedback from our target audience of 14-25. Once all feedback from this had been received we once again collated all of our ideas together and created another storyboard, The use of this feedback furthered our ideas and therefore influenced the outcome of our product. The indie genre is one of creativity and unique ideas which therefore led to the necessity for audience influence in order to conform to the conventions of the genre and create a product that distinctly mirrors this.

Our ideas were collated together regarding the music video itself and then we produced a number of questions that we would address our target audience with throughout the survey as well as the focus group. This allowed for the questions to be specific and concise to the aim: collate relevant information of the indie genre that will allow us to guide our further development of ideas.

Evaluation Question Two

Creating a distinct brand: The use of lights within performance

The use of lights throughout the performance element of the music video is recognisable to the artist. Therefore I utilised this throughout each text in order to fulfil the aesthetic of the artist in aim for it to become recognisable to their audience.

Further Poster Ideas

I decided to experiment with the use of fairy lights as well as the cultural reference of the Manchester Bee.

"I like the use of the lights; however, I believe that it isn't entirely necessary as it may look more professional without the fade of the two images. Also, the placement of 'Your Illuminations' could be suited better on the other side of the poster." - Grace Ball, Year 13

However, I decided through my own analysis, as well as further audience feedback, that the original image was more fitting to the aesthetic and looked more professional.

I asked further peers to show their opinions for the two designs to consolidate my decision of the second design. Here are my results:

1) /// 3
2) ///////////////// 17

Cultural Ideas for Ancillary Task: The Manchester Bee

The artist I have focused my tasks on is a local band, 'Your Illuminations'. I decided to focus my final ancillary task research on cultural codes in order to reinforce audience personal identity and a recognisable brand for the artist. I will utilise this in my ancillary task in order to initiate this cultural understanding.

Ancillary Task: Poster Draft and Ideas

I showed a selection of peers to analyse my poster and decide which design they preferred, focusing specifically on the image itself in relation to the brand of the artist themselves.

I selected a random 20 people in the demographic of the genre and created a tally chart to consolidate my ideas regarding the poster.

These were my results:

1)  ////////////    12
2) //////          6
3) //              2

From the findings of this research, I have decided to focus on the first design as the image is fitting with the aesthetic of the video as well as the artist themselves.

Final Digipak Design

From further audience feedback, the question of the professionalism of my product was brought about due to the lack of minute details within the digipak, such as the small print at the bottom of the back cover. I therefore researched a number of digipaks and then added this element to the digipak to complete the product.

Developed Ideas for Digipak

1) ////// 6
2) ////   4

"I really like the lights used behind where the CD would go on the first one, however, I think the lights need to be a bit brighter so they illuminate. I think this would be really fitting with the brand identity of the artist." - Sally Hopkins, Knutsford Academy, Year 13

Trial Ideas for Digipak: Final Plan

I asked 20 people to review my ideas and created a tally of the responses. I then took on board these ideas and acknowledged any changes that could be made in order to appeal to the target audience as well as conform to the indie genre.

1) /////////// 11
2) /// 3
3) ////// 6

Front Cover of the Digipak: Initial Editing

Research into CD covers: Focus on the Individual

From feedback received from previous drafts of my Digi Pak and my own analysis of the task and genre I have chosen, I decided to utilise elements of the music video and those characters within as the main focus of the Digi Pak.

From further research into the indie genre, it has become apparent to me that a number of albums utilise a sole image of an individual as the main focus of the front cover of the Digi Pak. I will therefore utilise an image of the main character in the narrative of the music video: Olivia, the empowered character who goes against stereotypical traits of innocent female characters, as the main focus of my Digi Pak, amongst images of the artist themselves/ their aesthetic on stage.

Raw Footage: Performance

Filming Performance: 4/3/17

On Saturday 4th March, me, Georgia and Danielle attended the 'Your Illuminations' gig at the Night and Day Cafe in Manchester. We both used a digital camera in order to capture a number of angles of the stage, artist, venue and crowd.

We aimed to film a number of clips using a tripod; however, due to complications with the venue we were unable to set it up due to restrictions of room capacity and the crowd. It wouldn't be plausible to film using a tripod due to the fact that we had nowhere to place it.

I filmed a number of clips using my digital camera from the side of the stage and among the crowd, focusing on the artist themselves, their instruments, the venue and the crowd.

Danielle and Georgia used the other camera in order to get a range of long shots from the crowd of the artists close up and their instruments.

Ancillary Task: Digi-Pak - Further Audience Feedback

From my first draft of the ancillary task I took audience feedback and utilised editing in order to change the lighting and colours used within the design in order for it to conform to the conventions of the indie genre.

I also received feedback for this draft in order to consolidate my ideas regarding the final draft of my digipak. This allowed for the distinct understanding of the visual intention of the aesthetic of the artist as well as the conforming conventions to the indie genre.

I asked a number of peers who are familiar with the indie/alternative genre and the recognisable elements of this genre. I received feedback that focused upon the use of colour. In relation to my first draft the feedback focused on the use of colour and the lack of colour in the second draft. Although the indie genre focuses on dim lighting and a lack of colour; it became clear that some colour was necessary.

Planning for Filming Performance: 4/3/17

The camera set up will consist of two cameras: one at the back of the venue on a tripod that will film the song 'Skin Tight', as well as another camera that will use not only the tripod, but also will utilise this camera to do a number of handheld shots. During other songs in the performance me, Georgia and Danielle will all film a number of handheld shots on the stage and from the crowd in order to meet the conventions of the indie genre.

We contacted the venue in order to ensure that filming was permitted for us. We ensured that we would be able to use our equipment and it was permitted by the venue and audience members for us to film at the performance and then utilise elements of these shots in our final product.

Filming 25/1/17: Narrative

On 25/1/17, we re-arranged to film with the male and female 'actors' for our music video. Due to difficulties with schedule, we had to change the male actor and instead Calum played the role within the video. We began filming around 2pm and manage to film the entirety of the narrative, using two cameras in order to capture a range of images from a number of angles.

Me. Danielle and Georgia all took on our roles of the camera we were using, the angle we would shoot from etc. This enabled for us to all play a role within the production of the video, as well as allowing us to all share a different perspective on what worked and what didn't.

We filmed a number of clips in order to ensure that we had enough footage to work with during post production. This is something I have learnt from my Foundation Portfolio, as it is a necessity to do this in order to not restrict yourself to a limited number of clips which will limit the opportunity for experimentation of editing.

I took on the role of filming one of the angles. Considering we used two cameras, in each scene I filmed from a different angle to Danielle such as in the argument scene. This enabled for a wide range of footage to choose from.

During our filming session we all took on a role; I took part in using one of the cameras to get a differing angle to the one filmed on the other camera. As mentioned, this allowed for a range of shot types to experiment with.
